The Sydney Morning Herald, Fri 11 Feb 1859 1

BEFORE the Chief Justice and Mr Justice Dickinson.

James Hyland was charged with having, [at Kingston Estate Newtown in the district of Sydney] on the 18th day of December last, committed an indecent offence [of bestiality with a mare].

The prisoner pleaded not guilty, and was undefended. The Solicitor-General prosecuted.

The evidence of the witnesses fully sustained the charge of attempting to commit the felony, and the jury having returned a verdict of guilty, the Court passed sentence upon the prisoner—that he be confined in Darlinghurst gaol and there kept to hard labour for a period of two years.

The Court adjourned till half-past ten this morning.

In the Second Court, jurors are required to be in attendance at the usual hour—ten o’clock.
