The Wilcannia Times, Fri 10 Oct 1885 1

WE have frequently called attention to the want of ordinary convenience in the Court House, and the near approach of the [Wilcannia] Quarter Sessions recalls the subject to our memory. The place is wholly without furniture, the only conveniences being the bench, the dock, the witness and jury boxes. It is scandalous that there is not a single seat for witnesses or jury panel, nor a lamp or candlestick belonging to the place, let alone seats for the general public. When the Sessions are on, those conveniences have to be borrowed wherever they can. The matter has been several times brought before the Department of Justice, but no attention has been paid to the representations made. We think the attention of Judge Backhouse might be called to the subject when he arrives. If his sympathies could be enlisted in the matter, there can be little doubt a word from him would have considerable weight with the Department. But besides what is required in the interior of the building there are conveniences required outside. There ought to be seats provided for the witnesses who have to remain outside until called to give their evidence, and the other natural conveniences should be left unlocked for their use. We trust that before the next sessions are held something will have been done to remedy the present shameful state of affairs complained of.
