WITHOUT LEAVE.

John Anderson, arrested for having without leave absented himself from the barque Oimara, was ordered to be sent on board.

DRUNKENNESS.

Alfred Copeland was fined 5s, with the option of three hours’ gaol, for drunkenness in Hunter-street on the evening of the 12th instant.

VAGRANCY.

Kate Beale was charged with having insufficient lawful means of support.

Constables Neill, Ramsay, and Broder said that they had never known accused to work. She was a late and habitual frequenter of the streets, being often half drunk in the company of drunken sailors.

Accused said that she was a married woman, receiving from her husband £1 a week for her support.

The SM did not believe the story, and sentenced accused to three months’ imprisonment in Maitland Gaol.

COMMITTED FOR TRIAL.

Charles Howe was charged, on remand from the 10th instant, with having, at Newcastle, attempted to commit a serious offence on Sydney Barker.

Having heard the additional evidence given by Dr Harris, accused was committed for trial at the Newcastle Quarter Sessions on December 6th next.

NEWCASTLE QUARTER SESSIONS.
———◦———
December 9.
———
(Before His Honor Judge Docker.)
———

The hearing of the remainder of the unusually heavy list of cases was begun at 9 am by his Honor Judge Docker, who was accompanied on the bench by Mr HH Lang, the Deputy-Sheriff.

The attendance of the public was small, the majority of those present in court being counsel, solicitors, jurymen, and examined witnesses.

A number of business men were inconvenienced by having to be in attendance as jurors, and his Honor expressed regret that they should have been inconvenienced by the necessity for a Saturday sitting. The list, his Honor said, had been an exceptionally heavy one, and as the weather was enervating he sympathised with jurors.

Messrs A Dalton and H Hingst, jurors, who stated that they had urgent business to attend to, were excused from attendance.

Mr AB Piddington again prosecuted for the Crown.
