FARM PRODUCE ACT.
———◦———
First Prosecution.
———

The first prosecution under the Farm Produce Agents Act, was conducted before Mr Camphin, SM, at the Central Police Court yesterday. Harry Benjamin Cornwell, 56, director, representing Cornwell and Co Pty Ltd, licensed farm produce agents, was charged with rendering a fraudulent account sale to HA Stone, in respect of a consignment of 26½ bushels of beans, and another to G Monte, in respect of the consignment of bananas, knowing the accounts to be false in a material particular.

Examination of the Act revealed that punishment by imprisonment was provided, and it was advanced by counsel that a corporation could not be imprisoned. Mr Camphin found that a prima facie case had not been made out, and the defendant was discharged.

In his evidence, Detective-Sergeant Truskett said that he had seen defendant and examined his books. When he pointed out that there appeared to be a double set of figures in the book, defendant, he alleged, stated that when goods were sold for cash, the full amount, less freight and commission, was returned to the grower, but when goods were sold on credit, he made certain deductions in his own favour, which accounted for the discrepancy in the figures.

Mr Rogers, of the Crown Law Office, appeared for the prosecution, and Mr Curtis and Dr Evatt (instructed by RD Meagher and Co) for the defendant.

ASTRONOMY AND ARCHITECTURE.
———▴———

Addressing members of the Institute of Architects last evening on “Astronomy in Architecture,” Mr J Nangle, Government Astronomer, said that most of our city buildings showed that not enough attention had been given to the regulation of the sun’s influence. A building should be constructed diagonally to the cardinal points of the compass, so that it would have the benefit of the sun’s rays on one part or another during the whole day. He was preparing a table indicating the position of the sun at different periods of the year, which should assist architects in drawing their plans.
